What is ScholarSkills for STARS?

ScholarSkills for STARS is a federally recognized 501C3 not-for-profit organization that provides training and resources to help communities and schools achieve high levels of literacy among all students. We beat dyslexia by preventing, detecting, and correcting it.

STARS is an acronym for Specialized Training in Analytical Reading & Spelling Skills.

How does ScholarSkills help schools and communities achieve exceptional literacy rates?

ScholarSkills provides parent workshops and professional development in the Science of Reading, Sound & Say Spelling™, and Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory strategies for improving literacy. We also help teachers diagnose and remediate reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

ScholarSkills offers Science of Reading and Sound & Say Spelling workshops that help parents and teachers equip students with the analytical language tools champion spellers use. Sound & Say Spelling is a Structured Spelling for Literacy™️ curriculum. Parents and teachers learn how to help students master phonetic, orthographic, etymological, and morphemic structures to achieve excellence in reading and writing.

ScholarSkills also helps parents and teachers implement effective, evidence-based literacy strategies such as Orton-Gillingham—a multi-sensory methodology, which is especially effective at remediating students challenged with dyslexia.

ScholarSkills partners with T.A.G. The Academic Gym to create Literacy Competitions that motivate students to learn.

Finally, ScholarSkills shows administrators, and teachers how to screen students at the earliest literacy stages to identify and remediate the Phonological Core Deficit, which is the primary cause of most reading disorders such as dyslexia.

How can schools implement their professional development training?

Teachers use the ScholarSkills Multisensory Academy for Reading Teachers (S.M.A.R.T.)  to implement the Science of Reading, Sound & Say Spelling, and Orton Gillingham strategies in or after school.

What is the ScholarSkills Multisensory Academy for Reading Teachers (S.M.A.R.T.)?

S.M.A.R.T.™️ is a virtual teacher preparatory program and student curriculum for achieving excellence in spelling, reading, and writing. S.M.A.R.T. helps teachers diagnose and remediate reading difficulties such as dyslexia while offering exceptional levels of literacy to all students.

S.M.A.R.T. provides teachers with tools that students can use in and after school to improve their spelling, reading, and writing.

S.M.A.R.T. allows teachers to monitor students’ progress. Teachers can analyze students’ progress, and students can monitor—and get excited about--their steps to success. Analytical reports enable instructors to modify student assignments so that each student can perform at their own skill level.

S.M.A.R.T. allows teachers to work with students using V.I.T.A.L.™ (or visual, interactive, tactile, adaptive learning) strategies, which guide students towards excellence in spelling, reading, and writing.

Diagnosing and Remediating Dyslexia

ScholarSkills also trains teachers to use the W.O.R.D. Test™, which diagnoses the severity of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

What is the W.O.R.D. Test?

The ScholarSkills W.O.R.D. Test is the Written Oral Reading Diagnostic Test.

The W.O.R.D. Test determines the presence and extent of the Phonological Core Deficit, which is a defining symptom of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.
